In 1970, a group of Black businessmen from Milwaukee purchased Peoples Brewing Company in Oshkosh, Wisconsin with the goal of providing a product that supported the Black community. But by 1973, they were out of business. There would not be another effort to compete with whites in the brewing industry until the modern craft beer era was well underway.
Please gather with us for a conversation about the history and importance of Peoples Brewing Company. John Harry of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and of the Milwaukee County Historical Society will lead this discussion with extremely valuable commentary and memories from Craig Crosby, the son of Henry Crosby, one of the owners of Peoples Brewing Company.
This virtual happy hour via Facebook Live is presented in collaboration with our friends at the Milwaukee County Historical Society.
