In 2020, brewers Sam Ross and Jay Westbrook set out to create a beer inspired by Chicago Black history and one that celebrated diversity in beer. With the help of Haymarket Beer Co., they created Harold’s ‘83 Honey Ale, an homage to Chicago’s first Black mayor, Harold Washington and to Harold’s Chicken restaurant. The beer was well received, later canned, and continues to be available throughout the city today.
In 2022, the Chicago Brewseum collaborated with Chicagoland’s Black owned breweries to create another series of beers inspired by a different aspect of Chicago history. The Stroll produced four unique bronze ales which shared and honored narratives of historic Bronzeville.
This Friday, we invite you to gather with us, Sam, Jay and the fellas from the Beerz and Barz Podcast at Bitter Pops to learn more about their work and raise a glass to the dynamic and diverse Chicago beer community.
This event is free. And while you’re at Bitter Pops, pick up the Black Beer History six pack.
