Kulmbacher, a dark, hoppy lager which originated in the German town of Kulmbach was, once upon a time, all the rage. Brewed for a local and international 19th century market, the beer certainly had its moment. Today, the style has become largely extinct and unknown. But, hey, there is hope!

Join us for a conversation about kulmbacher, past and present. Two of the Chicago Brewseum's League of Historians, Ron Pattinson and Mike Stein, discuss the history of Kulmbacher while Favio Garcia of Dynasty Brewing Company in Virginia chats about a modern take.

Pattinson has been writing about German Kulmbacher for years and his 1879 Kulmbacher Export recipe was brewed by August Schell Brewing in Minnesota in 2018. Stein has been researching American Kulmbacher in the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History archives and recently discovered a 1920 recipe which was just brewed and released by Dynasty Brewing, using methods researched by Pattinson. While Pattinson discusses German dark lager, Stein will cover American lager, and Garcia will explain how he used their research to create a beer on the verge of extinction.

The Kulmbacher brewed by Dynasty Brewing, Love Vigilantes, is a collaboration with Ocelot Brewing (VA) and Lost Lagers (DC). It is available for purchase on the Dynasty website and can be shipped to you just in time for this talk!

This virtual happy hour happens via Zoom and Facebook Live. And, yes, we’ll have a killer New Order playlist to accompany the beer and the chat!
